Annual Luncheon 2014

Our annual luncheon, one of the foremost gatherings of the Bay Area legal community, provides essential support for our free legal services. Our more than 850 guests include attorneys from a wide spectrum of Bay Area and national firms; Federal and State court justices; summer law firm associates; representatives from corporations, foundations, and businesses; public officials; community leaders; and law school professors.

Keynote Speaker

Rick Welts

Rick Welts is President and Chief of Operations for the Golden State Warriors National Basketball Association (NBA) team. As the highest-ranking professional in American sports to be openly gay, Mr. Welts has served as an example of courage and leadership in an industry that is slow to accept LGBT players and staff members. Prior to joining the Golden State Warriors, Mr. Welts served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Phoenix Suns and, from 1996 to 1999, was the Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of the NBA.

Recipient of the Mathew O. Tobriner Public Service Award

Dee Mosbacher and Nanette Gartrell

Dr. Mosbacher is a psychiatrist and Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker whose most recent project was a web-based video campaign to end homophobia in men's professional sports. Her 2010 documentary, “Training Rules,” focused on a women’s basketball coach at Penn State who refused to allow lesbian players on her team. Dr. Gartrell is a psychiatrist, researcher, and writer whose groundbreaking U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study examines the social, psychological, and emotional development of children and the dynamics of planned lesbian families. She is a Visiting Distinguished Scholar at the Williams Institute, UCLA School of Law—a research institute devoted to LGBT law and public policy.  Married in 2005, Dee and Nanette have been together since 1975.
