Legal Aid Celebrates Transgender Awareness Week

Legal Aid Society – Employment Law Center is proud to celebrate Transgender Awareness week. We join LGBT centers, nonprofit organizations, and individuals across the country in calling attention to key issues affecting the transgender community.

Transgender individuals experience employment discrimination at an alarming rate.  Ninety percent of transgender and gender non-conforming people surveyed in 2011 had experienced harassment, mistreatment, and/or discrimination on the job, or had hidden who they were to avoid it.  Nearly half of respondents were fired, not hired, or denied a promotion because of their gender identity. 

Legal Aid applauds recent progress in legal protections for transgender employees.  Earlier this year the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission held that federal law prohibits employment discrimination and harassment on the basis of gender identity.  Under the Fair Employment and Housing Act, California law protects employees from workplace discrimination and harassment on the basis of sex, gender, gender identity, and gender expression.  If you are experiencing discrimination or harassment because of your gender identity, please contact us.
