THANK YOU TO THE BAY AREA LEGAL COMMUNITY!
The Society's annual benefit luncheon on July 10th raised a great amount of financial support for our work providing free legal services to working poor families. The event brought together a more than 900 members of the Bay Area's legal, corporate, and public interest communities, as well as members of the judiciary, to mark the Society's 91st year of service.
This year's Mathew O. Tobriner Public Service Award, given annually in recognition of outstanding contributions to achieving justice, went to three recipients - each inspiring for their commitment to preventing violence against women.
Guo Jianmei: Nobel Peace Prize nominee and founder of The Center for Women's Law Studies and Legal Services of Peking University, for advancing women's legal rights through China's first legal aid clinic. Award presented by Hilary K. Krane, Senior VP and General Counsel, Levi Strauss & Co.
Robin Runge: Director, American Bar Association, Commission on Domestic Violence, for helping to inaugurate Project SURVIVE and advocating nationally on domestic violence and legal issues. Award presented by Toni Rembe, van Löben Sels/RembeRock Foundation
Esta Soler: Founder and president of the Family Violence Prevention Fund, for her pioneering work on behalf of women and children in the U.S. and worldwide. Award presented by Crystal Hayling, President & CEO, Blue Shield of California Foundation
The event ended with keynote speaker's Jeffrey Toobin captivating address during which he shared his sharp and witty insights into the Supreme Court. The board and staff extend their deep appreciation to the following firms, individuals, guests, and sponsors who played an essential role in raising critical funding for our programs and made the luncheon a thought-provoking and moving event.
